Emirates flight catches fire after landing in Dubai

An Emirates flight en route from southern India caught fire after landing heavily at Dubai International airport Wednesday.

Dramatic pictures showed thick smoke billowing from the stricken aircraft shortly after it came to a standstill.

"Emirates can confirm that today, 3 August 2016, flight EK521 traveling from Trivandrum International Airport in Thiruvananthapuram, India to Dubai has been involved in an accident at Dubai International Airport," the airline said in a statement.

"There were 282 passengers and 18 crew on board," it added. "The Boeing 777 aircraft, departed at 10.19 a.m. from Trivandrum International Airport and was scheduled to land at 12.50 p.m. at Dubai International Airport.

"We can confirm that there are no fatalities among our passengers and crew. All passengers and crew are accounted for and safe."
